Promising Progress in CJD Treatment

by Alison Jordan

Successful treatment of the new variant form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) may be a matter of years away, according to expert and Nobel Prize winner Stanley Prusiner from the University of California at San Francisco. While scientists around the world are struggling to understand how this novel infectious protein jumps the species barrier, others are concentrating their efforts on finding targeted treatment approaches that may save lives.

Same Gene Different Drug

by Laura Spinney

Genes that control the cell's ability to deal with environmental toxins may also mediate other effects, such as resistance to therapeutic drugs. When designing such drugs, say researchers who study gene-environment interactions, it is essential to understand that the function of the target gene may be determined by its context.
