Bela Julesz has been involved in visual research, particularly depth perception and pattern recognition for many years. This particular work in conjuction with Leon Harmon, exploring the limits of visual recognition, was featured on the cover of Science magazine (Harmon, L. D. and Julesz, B. "Using photographs and grids has imposed a discipline upon my paintings that frees me to experiment with
their detailed structure." The richly detailed portraits of Chuck Close often take on a pixellated character; he will be a participant in the symposium accompanying this exhibit.
