Artists performed an integral role in scientific excursions of the 19th century, and the voyage of the HMS Beagle was no exception. Conrad Martens traveled with Darwin through the South Pacific, documenting in his sketchobook many of their exciting cultural, as well as scientific, encounters. These images have also recently been put up for auction at Sotheby's; a sample of the collection can be found on their Australian Fine Art auction page.
"These drawings are a crucial part of the only illustrated account of this historical voyage, allowing us to gain important visual insight into the nature of Darwin's experiences so formative to his ideas," writes Adam Free of Sotheby's Paintings Department in Sydney, Australia. Beagle readers may also want to visit the Sotheby's home page for more information on upcoming auctions.
