Subject: Bad News about Barry Wolman

Dear Ones,

I am devastated to have to tell you all that Barry Wolman, co-owner and fearless leader of Cancer-L, after battling with NHL for 12+ years, lost his life on Tuesday, March 25,1997. His funeral will be in Brookline, Mass. on Friday, March 28, the at Stanetsky's Funeral Home, at 11:00 AM in the small chapel. Since the family is coming in from Pittsburgh, there will be no visitation.

Barry was my very first net "buddy". He was my lodestar during trying times when he'd always come up with the logical thing to do, the place to research, the positive attitude, the statement that clarified my thinking. I'll really miss his clear thinking analysis of a situation and his delightful sense of the ridiculous. We've all lost a good friend and a very special man

Art Flatau and I are hoping to work up a memorial page in his honor. Please send posts to us or to the lists.

I never met Barry Wolman either (as Paul Klein wrote). We didn't even share the same illness. I knew him only through this list, as a cyberfriend. I always read his posts with interest because he wrote so clearly and was always so encouraging and upbeat. I admired his attitude and his courage and respected his opinions. It was a terrible shock to read of his death.

It is so hard to maintain a positive attitude when living with cancer. In Barry's case, he managed to help many other people through this list. The message I got from his presence and his life was, indeed, to never give up but also to turn adversity into something positive by helping others, which he did with grace. I miss his presence, I'm grateful for his example.

Jean

I was really sad to see another of our allies climbing the golden stairway. Please send on my condolences to Barry's family. The heavens have gained another special star to look down on us and guide us through our daily trials. My heartfelt sorrow to all who knew and loved this very special man.

Pat.

Someone asked if Barry Wolman "lost his battle". He did not. If anyone showed us how to fight and win the battle that is cancer it is Barry. He had a quality of life until the end, showing his determination to make the most of life but importantly to lead others to make the most of it. Leave it to the newspapers to use the term "lost the battle with cancer". We all know from knowing people like him how to fight well and to live on in the memories and hopes of others as they, too, refuse to give up.

May his family find peace among the mourners in Zion.

I agree and I'm glad that this was expressed. Yes, Barry Wolman died and that leaves a hole in those who knew and loved him, as well as for those, like me, who only made his acquaintance indirectly via Hem-Onc.

He was a wonderful man and his life is worth celebrating, his death worth mourning. But he did not loose. He survived until the very last moment, and then he left us, but he left us with memories, with lessons, and with a model, whether we each battle cancer or some other enemy, seen or unseen.

Barry Wolman won every day he lived, and so, with luck, do we all.

I just wanted to say that, as a mostly lurker, I looked forward to Barry Wolman's posts - sanity, I guess. Very sad news.

A wonderful man who will be truly missed. I feel I know all of you so well, yet it is only through this machine that we have made contact. We will all miss his words of wisdom and his sense of eternal hope of a cure for all these awful diseases we battle along with each day. God bless and sleep peacefully now - you have concluded your battle and signed the peace treaty.

Sadly

Pat.

Hi, gang,

Barry was tough and smart, wasn't he? He'd mastered the Gandhi-esque technique of not resisting too much, not allowing sad or bad feelings to interfere with his main goal. I really, really thought he'd be the guy who hung on until "The Cure".

And, speaking now as a computer geek, I can say that Barry was indeed one smart cookie in this field.

I feel terrible.

Love,

I was so sad to hear about Barry Wolman. When my brother was diagnosed with mm about four months ago, he was one of the first people who contacted me via the internet and, since my brother didn't have a computer, he sent me his phone number and they had a good chat. My deepest sympathy goes to all of his family and friends.

Lorraine...
something very refreshing about this line,....sometimes just have to "go there"..to 'terrible...have finally got it, after 40+ years...that staying out of that room, holding the door shut...only perpetuates the sadness, and leaves it stuck....compiling in a way that offers no relief, and no way to create something out of the pain...

finally learned about "terrible, ", and yes, Barry's incredible strength of spirit, and seemingly meaningless and premature death...only lend themselves to new gifts when we are willing to move into that room....the only way to the other side of loss....to the blessings we can choose to create from this rotten deal....is THROUGH....humbling after all these years of "anesthetized emotion", isnt it??? and....on top of all that...it IS a choice...geesh, I sometimes wish it was easier, dont you?,/P>

Thank you for simply saying it...like it is....that awful ache inside, lump in throat at the oddest moments....irritation at things like mass suicide which make Barry's....and all of our....fight seem somehow more noble...and lend one to question how...and where....this world became so confusing.....

even while knowing that one's love, truth, and spirit....never ever die.......

thanks again.....felt good....

love,
pooh

I was saddened to hear of Barry Wolman's passing. I didn't know him but read his posts for more than a year. They were wonderful and brought so much hope and inspiration to so many on the list. I miss them. He has taken his "show" on the road and I'm sure has much better things to do now. He fought the good fight and is enjoying the rewards for being so faithful to his call. Go for it, Barry!
