Bone Marrow Transplant Survivors

 Adult Hodgkin's Disease

  • Stephen Spriggs lives with his wife Laura in the Cincinatti, Ohio area. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease in October, 2000. He relapsed in November, 2001 and had an autologous bone marrow transplant in February, 2002. In June, 2003 he relapsed again and he is presently trying to find a donor in order to have another transplant using an unrelated donor.

 Adult Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL)

  • Mike Barela's story of his battle with Hodgkin's Disease. He has had his stem cells harvested in case of relapse and his siblings were typed too. They were perfect matches for each other but not for him. Mike maintains an excellent The Lymphoma Information Network site, which is highly recommended

  • Ambrose Heaney was diagnosed with NHL in 1983 and had an autologous BMT after relapsing in 1985. He is the chair of the Bone Marrow Transplant Support Group of Ireland Committee.

  • Greg Miklas was dignosed with follicular mixed-cell non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in April, 1992. Greg underwent standard chemotherapy at the time, but relapsed in November, 1998. He is scheduled for a bone marrow transplant with his brother Tom as the donor in March, 2000.

  • Tony Presley was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (large cell) at the age of 42, in 1988! He had chemotherapy and then an autologous BMT at Emory University Transplant Center Home Page.

  • Katelyn Rose Hubbell was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia in July, 1997 at the age of 4.

  • Zak Rossbach was diagnosed in June 1997 with Severe Aplastic Anemia. He had a BMT in September, 1998 from an unrelated donor.

  • Cassie Samborski was born in 1994 and lives in Illinois. She was diagnosed with Niemann Pick Disease's. She had two bone marrow transplants in 1995 and 1996, the second after the first one failed to engraft.

  • Steven Tate, was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia in May, 1996 at the age of 2. He underwent a matched unrelated donor (MUD) BMT in December, 1997.

In Memory of Those Who Passed Away from after Bone Marrow Transplants

  • Sharyn Cederman was diagnosed with in 1996 with Myelofibrosis. She passed away on January 17, 2000 at the age of 51. She lived in Austrialia and had a bone marrow transplant in November, 1999.

  • Ty Chaney 's web page. Ty was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 1995 and has had two bone marrow transplants, an autologous one followed by an allogeneic one with a matched related donor (MUD), both done in Little Rock Arkansas. Ty passed away in August, 1998.

  • Bob Czako, was well known on the BMT-TALK mailing list for his hilarious stories about dealing his cancer and his treatment. He passed away April 13, 1997 after both an autologous BMT and later an allogeneic BMT for non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He will be sorely missed.

  • King Hussein ibn Talal ibn Hussein of Jordan was born in Amman, Jordan, on Nov. 14, 1935, and passed away February 8, 1999. He had Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and had had two bone marrow transplants. Some articles about his life:

  • Living beyond all expectations - Transplant survivor lives 29 years after beating the odds, an article about Steve McCarty who had a bone marrow transplant at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) in 1971!!!! for aplastic anemia at the age of 12. Unfortunately Steve passed away in June, 2003 from hepatitis/liver cancer that he contracted from blood transfusions during his treatement.

  • Rob Northrop (a.k.a. Pony Boy & Rad Rob), passed away in December, 1997 from complications of a bone marrow transplant for leukemia. He was 26.

  • Barry Wolman, beloved co-owner of Cancer-L mailing list, who had battled non-hodgkins Lymphoma for many years, and who had had a peripheral stem cell transplant. Barry developed lung complications which he couldn't fight. His clarion cry: "Never Give Up. Never, Never Give Up!" lives on in those of us who cherish his memory.
