The material in this Center has been excerpted or adapted from Childhood Leukemia: A Guide for Families, Friends, and Caregivers by Nancy Keene , third edition, copyright 2002 by O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. . Information includes a FAQ on childhood leukemia , an explanation of blood counts , practical tips for parents of children with leukemia and more. Although this site is oriented towards childhood leukemia, there is useful infomation about adult leukemia too.
- Acute Myelogenous Leukemia by Karen Seiter, MD, from the eMedicine World Medicine Library . This is a very technical review of the symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatment of adult AML .
- Acute Myelocytic Leukemia (also called Acute Myelogenous Leukemia) by Mark E. Weinblatt, MD, from the eMedicine World Medicine Library . This is a very technical review of the symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatment of pediatric AML .
- Acute Myeloid Leukemia from CancerConsultants.com is an overview of the treatment of AML for patients.

Cytoplasmic Nucleophosmin in Acute Myelogenous Leukemia
with a Normal Karyotype, New
England Journal of Medicine , August 21, 2003,
Volume 352, No. 3, pages 254-266 by Brunangelo Falini,
et. al. for the GIMEMA Acute Leukemia Working Party.
(The full article will be available for free 6 months
after publication, registration is required, until then the
article abstract is available.) This study of
patients with AML found that nucleophosmin (NPM), a
nuclear protein, was displaced into the cytoplasm in
about 60 percent of patients with a no chromosomal
abnormalities (normal karyotype) and predicted a good
response to induction chemotherapy.
-
Effect of Priming with Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating
Factor on the Outcome of Chemotherapy for Acute Myeloid
Leukemia , New
England Journal of Medicine , August 21, 2003,
Volume 349, No. 8, pages 743-752 by Bob Löwenberg,
et. al. Patients were randomly assigned to get ordinary
induction and consolidation chemotherapy, half with
G-CSF (Neupogen) given concurrently and half
without. The patients who recieved G-CSF had a higher
rate of disease-free survival at 4 years. Patients with
standard-risk AML had better overall survival at 4
years.
-
Acute Myeloid Leukemia by Richard M. Stone, Margaret
R. O'Donnell and Mikkael A. Sekeres from Hematology , American
Society of Hematology Education Program Book ,
2004. This article summarizes the current state of the
Art for treating AML in adults, with seperate sections
for younger adults (under 60) and older adults (60 and
over). It discusses the optimal choice of induction and
postremission therapy, the role of allogeneic and
autologous transplants as well as newer therapies that
are being developed. Also see
Acute Myeloid Leukemia, by Frederick R. Appelbaum, Jacob
M. Rowe, Jerald Radich and John E. Dick from 2001
edition. This articles includess a summary of the
current state-of-the-art therapy for adult AML,
discusses the fact that AML is not a single disease, but
a number of related diseases each distinguished by
unique cytogenetic markers, looks at how these unique
cytogenetic markers provide the opportunity to develop
targeted therapies. It also includes newer
immunotherapeutic approaches to treating AML, including
the use of antibody-based treatments.
-
Realistic Pathologic Classification of Acute Myeloid Leukemias
, by Arber, Daniel A. from the
American Journal of Clinical Pathology , April 2001, Volume 115,
Number 4. This is very technical discussion of a more clinically
meaningful classification scheme for AML. Other classification
criteria are the current French-American-British (FAB) system and a
recently proposed World Health Organization (WHO)
classification.
- Therapy of Acute Myeloid Leukemia by Martin S. Tallman, from Cancer Control: Journal of the Moffitt Cancer Center , Vol 8, No. 1, 2001. This article is a review of the current treatment options for AML and the current thinking of the prognosis for AML patients.
- Core Binding Factor (CBF) Primary Acute Myeloid Leukemia: Biology and Clinical Implications , Marcucci Guido, et. al. from Medscape Oncology, March/April 2000, Volume, 3 Number 2. Discusses AML with a translocation (8;21)(q22;q22) or inversion of chromosome 16. These genomic abnormalities disrupt the genes for core binding factor (CBF) and have a favorable prognosis. This review discusses the molecular biology and clinical management of primary AML with these abnormalities.
- Recent Advances in the Biology and Management of Primary Acute Myeloid Leukemia with Rearrangements of the MLL Gene , Strout, Matthew P., et. al., from Medscape Oncology, May/June 2000, Volume, 3 Number 3. Discusses the detection of the Myeloid-Lymphoid Leukemia or Mixed Lineage Leukemia (MLL) gene in patients with AML and the prognostic significance of this finding.
- Novel Therapeutic Targets and Strategies in Acute Leukemia and MDS by Richard M. Stone, M.D., describes new treatments for AML and Myelodysplastic Syndrome, including Programmed Cell Death, Inhibiting Angiogenesis, and Immunotherapy. This is a summary of articles presented at the 41th Annual American Society of Hematology Meeting, December, 1999.
- Total-Body Irradiation and Melphalan Is a Safe and Effective Conditioning Regimen for Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation in Children With Acute Myeloid Leukemia in First Remission , Bonetti F., et. al., Journal of Clinical Oncology , Vol 17, Issue 12, December, 1999, pages 3729-3735.
- Management of
Acute Myeloid Leukemia in Elderly Patients , Hiddemann W.,
et. al., Journal of Clinical
Oncology , Vol 17, Issue 11, November, 1999, pages
3569-3576. This article argues that in general, intensive therapy for
AML at older age seems to be a better treatment then supportive
care.

Chemotherapy Compared with autologous or allogeneic Bone Marrow
Transplantation in the Management of acute Myeloid Leukemia in First
Remission , New England Journal
of Medicine December 3, 1998, Vol. 339, No. 23, page 1649 by

required). also an accompanying editorial

by alan K. Burnett, in the same edition.
autologous marrow transplantation for AML has no survival advantage
an article from Reuters Health via Intelihealth on these
findings. a review of this article by Kenneth Blank of University of
Pennsylvania Cancer Center is available on Oncolink , the article is OncoLink
Journal Scan: Chemotherapy Compared with autologous or allogeneic Bone
Marrow Transplantation in the Management of acute Myeloid Leukemia in
First Remission . Followup Correspondence: Treatment

- Frequency of prolonged remission duration after high-dose cytarabine intensification in acute myeloid leukemia varies by cytogenetic subtype (article abstract) by Bloomfield, et. al. Cancer Research September 15 1998, Volume 58 No. 18, page 4173. Reports on long terbin were normal. My red and white counts were just below normal, and platelets were at 46,000. To make a long story short, they found I have gall stones and will need to lose my gall bladder, but not until my platelets reach 100,000 or so. The echo-cardiogram showed calcification of the valve to the aorta--which fortunately sounded worse than it is. The valve is still working correctly, but I'll need antibiotic precautions before I go to the dentist, have a colonoscopy, etc. Oh well, I can live with that!
The best news of all was that I returned to work full time the first week after Thanksgiving. So far, I have been thrilled to be back and feeling fine. Here's wishing I'm as strong as I hope I am! Six Month Check-up
